When personal snapshots are lost or abandoned by their owners, the memories they represent are lost with them. Even those kept safe in family albums are often only a generation or two away from becoming unrecognizable to those who inherit them. Art historian Geoffrey Batchen describes these photographs as “memories without memory, stories without storytellers.”
